Spanning the last ten days or so...ever since I left home to come to my new home...here are fifty random observations.
1. The Indira Gandhi International Airport sucks. So much so that loo doors don't close.
2. The staff at the IGI Airport is cooperative and friendly.
3. I have had kinder-faced principals than the stern looking airhostesses that were aboard my flight from Delhi to Frankfurt. I was so petrified of them that debated a hundred times before asking them for water.
4. The same flight played several movies back to back...and entertaining ones at that.
5. Different matter altogether that they were all silent since something was wrong with the plane's sound system.
7. Watched a silent Ice Age for the first time in my life.
8. The food aboard this flight was cold, flaky, and little in amount.
9. The Frankfurt airport is spotlessly clean.
10. The Germans look and behave so efficiently that it's nearly scary.
11. The Air India flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles had pretty and attentive airhostesses, very very good food, excellent sound system, and better TV programs.
12. Why? Just because the number of firangs were more on this flight than the earlier one did AI think it necessary to spruce up its act?
13. A flight where 96% or so of the passengers were Indians didn't deserve good service and good food is it?
14. The Los Angeles airport is HUGE.
15. I got lost a hundred times.
16. Everytime there was some staff member to bail me out with a "Hi! How may I help you?"
17. People (and not just staff) of all ages, shapes, sizes, features, and colors were helpful. So much for all those who had made me paranoid that post 9/11, American airports treat South Asians badly.
18. Los Angeles airport is big, huge, and somewhat confusing. But the people are friendly and helpful.
19. From Los Angeles, I caught an Alaska Airlines flight to the city of Spokane in the state of Washington.
20. Domestic airlines within the USA do not give the kind of meals Indian domestic airlines do.
21. They serve only meager refreshments.
22. I had a brilliantly red colored cranberry juice. The glass and the juice in it were lovely.
23. And the accompanying spicy peanuts were very good too.
24. The Americans love students.
25. Idaho is a mountanous state.
26. Walking up and down my University will make sure that I am reduced to half my size by the time I come back home.
27. Which is a good thing.
28. Of the international students I have met here I got along exceptionally well with this one guy from Peru and another from Zimbabwe.
29. The largest ethnic group from India here in Moscow comprises Teluguites...yes, Andhra Pradesh rules here.
30. My apartment number is B7.
31. It is located in the quietest place I have ever lived in my life. No one blows horns.
32. The food servings in America are huge.
33. You better not order a single plate by yourself. You will never be able to finish it.
34. I love my teachers already.
35. They are maha excited to have someone from India, a completely new experience for them too.
36. People actually work.
37. And they look up when you approach their desk/counter with a question. They take pains to answer and if they can't help you they make sure to direct you to someone who can.
38. In a small town like Moscow, it's common enough to leave your car unlocked for long periods of time.
39. My flatmate is a darling. Manasi loves silver, food, men, movies, books...in no particular order.
40. And makes excellent food.
41. Walmart spoils you for choices. Too many choices, too many brands may not always be a good thing.
42. Saying "hi" is inbuilt in this system. But at times I do wonder how much they mean it.
43. Moscow is pretty.
44. Health and health insurance is a hugely big deal.
45. Dinner invitations are at the ridiculous time of 5/6 pm usually!
46. It's nice and warm during the day but chilly at night.
47. I miss my phone.
48. And therefore not being able to call and sms all those people who were an intrinsic part of my daily life.
49. Life is good here.
50. I miss my mum the most.

I simply love, LOVE the tone of this post. It's inherently childlike, and gives the impression that you were not lost only a hundred times. You are still lost somewhere. :)
*Watched a silent Ice Age for the first time in my life.
*Dinner invitations are at the ridiculous time of 5/6 pm usually!
ROTFL!!!
I miss my mum the most.
Awww!! How sweet. :) Maybe the new phone will help.
It does look like you'll have a good time over there. I'm really, truly happy. I'll pray that your stay over there is as awesome for you as awesome can be.
Take care.
Something that caught my attention instantly:
32. The food servings in America are huge.
47. I miss not having a phone.
I certainly wish you did. :'(
Err...It's just nice to read the life is 'good' there. Seems I just wanted to read/hear that. I'm glad, relieved :)
this was a grrreat list. had a lot of fun reading it.
firstly, i was about to mention the same point as Rohit. you miss NOT having a phone?? really?
I agree that you WERE an editor but such errors(i'm hoping!)are not allowed. :)
oye.... woh 5 baje dinner karte hain to 9 baje kya khaate hain?? ye routine to mere grand parents ke routine se bhi zyaada scary hai. wahan pe 7 baje dinner hota hai aur main 11 baje(when they are fast asleep) bhooki mar rahi hoti hoon.
you know, you might help me develop a liking for that country which i do not have as of now.
And again, i'm happy that life is good there.
khush raho beta...( this is not coming from Kiddi) :D
Never been to any airport but yes saw frankfurt airport pics ..)

Congratulations Mouche!
On doing a MF. :)
And thank you so much for your wishes. Although I can see that you haven't kept me posted about what is really going on in your front. Hmph.
And yeah...
"...how nice it is to have people say 'hi' - and how disturbing it is to realise it doesn't mean a thing."
I didnt say that...I said I just wonder how much they mean it.
@ Swetank
Thank you. :D
How goes it for you in IIT dude?
@ Rohit
You bet the food servings are huge...they are actually gigantic.
Not sure what you mean by the second point. Are you sure you read it right? :)
@ BASTM
What you talking about? :D
And yes they eat dinner by 6. Atleast in Moscow they do. They probably eat a light supper or something later in the night. Morning begins real early. Office closes by 4:30. Every corresponding meal is also early therefore.
I wonder why you dont seem to like the US though. I got the feeling during some of our phone conversations as well. Has the US harmed you in any way personally? If not then such a closed mindset doesnt seem like a good thing to have. It's almost like an American who has never visited India announcing, "India so sucks. It's so pathetic. How can anyone like it?" And that, we know, would be a foolish and unfair thing to say.
@ Chitrangada
Trust me, airports on the whole are not that interesting places to be. I personally prefer railway stations...just like I prefer railway journeys over those in plane. Simply because trains seem to have more character and color within them.
And yes, will keep observing. :)
I meant, I wish you had a phone. Baba, wahan jake mere comments bhi samajh nahi ayenge ab? :O
Very very interesting read...looking forward to more posts!!
So how come you are travelling so much???? I guess i havent been up to date :)

@ Rohit
Sorry hai, maaf kar de Kidda.
@ b
:D
@ Fugitive thought
Name change yet again? Good good.
I am not really travelling as much as I would like to. Student budgets don't allow that.
@ D
Life is good D, as I am sure you could make out from the list. How is your life? Needless to say am waiting for the pics.
@ Mayuri
Thanks. Will keep that in mind.
@ Prashant
Hugs, hugs, hugs.
You better get yourself a job here in Idaho.
@ Akash
Nahin nahin koi kaam nahin karta...pura desh tere PJs pe chalta hai. Ab khush? :D
@ Praveen
Some of them are sweet. For the rest of them and for my own educational advancement, I am more than willing to learn those words.
I read this a loooong time back when I came to your blog, but had to log off in a hurry so couldn't leave a comment. Since then it's been on my mind to return, read it once more and tell you how much I liked it.
I liked it a LOT! :)
Indian airports suck, and IGIA sucks the most. And point 3 is true, it's true!! I particularly dislike Air India ever since I lost a cell phone on an international flight coming back home - I dropped it in the plane and since it was switched off (on the pilot's incessant request) I couldn't locate it by calling, obviously. And when I asked an airhostess to help, she asked me whyyyy had I switched it off and howwww could we ever locate it now (intonation of voice reproduced as faithfully as possible in text). Pff!!
Saying "hi" is inbuilt in this system. But at times I do wonder how much they mean it.
It feels nice, though.
Life is good here.
Great! :)
@ Amiya
Thank you. I am glad to hear that.
Your voice intonation of the airhostess was perfect. I could picture her quite clearly. :D
