The Alive & The Dead

Five hours of non-stop work has given KirrinIsland a new look that has replaced her ghastly pink and white robe. She has been trimmed down, her face cleansed, and then re-made up. She is out to face the world with a more confident stride, or so her creator believes.

Moving on.

Can you please tell me the worst movie you have ever seen? No, seriously. I am doing some research on this topic right now. I have been motivated to do so since I saw Red last week. The one starring Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley, and Amrita Arora. Why did I watch it? Because sometimes the need to hear Hindi is so great that I succumb to any and every temptation. Anyway, I didn’t start watching the movie with any preconceived notion, I was determined to give its every scene a fair shot at survival.

So Red is a thriller. It was so edge of the seat and unpredictable that while it played, I went and washed my clothes, made some toast, took a ten minute nap, and yet managed to correctly guess who the killer was going to be.
Two things in particular sealed Red’s fate for me:
Firstly, the fact that Celina’s performance is so power packed that she makes Amrita Arora look as magnificent as Shabana Azmi.
Secondly, the imagination and dialogue that has gone into this movie is spectacular. Initially, we see Celine Jaitley as a grieving widow. Her best friend, Amrita Arora, wants to bring her back to normal life, so she does what any well meaning friend would do if you lose a loved one. Amrita calls Celina, who is named Anahita in this masterpiece, and says, “Hi Anahita. Chalo, chalo, aaj raat ko disco mein aa rahi ho na?”
Just the remedy to get over a trauma.

ME FIRST!
Woohoo.
This is superb. I love the template. I'd take some time to read here in this font, though. (If that sort of change really makes sense!)

Fresh..and an awesome dark tone. :)

Did you work on this all by yourself?

R said...

Oh my. Damnnnit I haven't seen Red. Jeez.
Hope you're still going to be friends with me. I mean, yeah, it must get tough for you - how can your friends be so un-happening? Red sounds like the best thing ever. I feel deprived. Sheesh.

it still needs some tweaking.........
boring movies...lots of them.....even in chennai , one movie i left in between was popcorn khao mast ho jao :(

Anonymous said...

nothin in comparison to 'BOOM' which gave me a severe urge to boom my head against a wall after seeing this flick..... atleast this movie had some meaty scenes thats wat the promos suggest.... i like your brutally honest discription of the movie..... and also the this template seems better and good....

Lmao!! :D :D
Yeah, my first question was, why did you even watch it?! But, you already answered that. My second question, however is, what were they doing screeing it in the US?! Who would come to watch Aftab Shivdasani and Celina Jaitly prancing about semi-naked? Ugh! Vikram Bhatt is the worst thing that ever happened to the Hindi film industry! Not even Karan Johar.

Oh, almost forgot, love the template. Dark is the way to go! :D

MS! Me seventh!!
Love the rich dark template – very impressive new look!! also the kipling quote is a fave!
as for the list of boring movies – yes – i never play favourites – will tell u that on internet time sponsored by dad :-P
in office – couldnt resist the urge to come and take a peek!

Oh, I guess I visited your blog while you were in the middle of making changes.
This one is definitely better than that old one but could still look better. Maybe you could change the font of the Kipling quote...the blog description space? Just a suggestion.

And thank god I have exams to study for. But even then I wouldn't watch that kinda movie. Feel so incredibly sorry for you. Go buy yourself an ice-cream. :D

I think the previous look of your blog was better... chokhe ei ta boddo lagey....

I saw some of the crappiest movies of my life when in England, all for the reason you mention :)

Top three in ascending order of crappiness - Tom, Dick & Harry, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, VIVAH (you have to watch it to believe me)

@ Rohit
Congratulations!
Thanks for liking this, and yeah I did all the work myself.
And for us to continue to be friends, it is imperative that you go and see the film asap.

@ Vir
Nope.

@ D
Tell me the moment in the movie when you decided to get out.

@ Aqui
Never saw BOOM. The reviews were so disheartening. But I will take your word for it.

@ Jayant
It wasn't being screened anywhere as such. I was playing it on my computer. Hindi movies are quite often available online.
Yeah baby, dark is the way to go. But you still have to tell me the worst movie you have ever seen.

@ Keka
Incredibly touched that you defied the powers that be to come and take a sneak peak at what was happening here. May your tribe increase.
And I am waiting for your answer with your usual dazzling sense of humor in place.

@ Richa
Changed the font. Although this is still not to my liking. There are such limited options as far as the fonts are concerned.
You didnt answer the question either!

@ Aritro
Chokh bondho korey rakh tahole. On a more gentler note, tor comment ta peye color gulo ektu tweak korlam.

@ Aurvi
Are you trying to tell me that Vivah is worse than Red???

@ Chitrangada
I didnt mind Kuch na Kaho that much actually.
And KANK at least had better actors that Red. So your movies don't get my support. :) Sorry!

RB said...

Ummm...do I really have to?

Ok. But promise you me won't make fun of it. I think its name is Tiranga or something. Maybe I've seen worse stuff, but this is what I can remember. Raj Kumar, a hideous villian and loads of crap! Uff.

And I like the modifications that you've made. That greenish colour was standing out. This is better.
And you've done it yourself? Not bad! Quite proud of you! :-)

Firstly, the fact that Celina’s performance is so power packed that she makes Amrita Arora look as magnificent as Shabana Azmi. -- ROFL!

Great blog here - very much I like - must keep reading you.

congrats to kirrinisland for its new look :)

the worst movie i'd ever watched -
mat poochiye... brings back those painful moments...
but i'd tell u anyways :)

i was doing this paper on 'feminism articulated by indian cinema in 21st century'. this led me to watch 'ek choti si love story' (*ing manisha koirala)and 'gajgamini'(*ing madhuri dixit)... rest is history.. disastrous one to say ! ... i wasn't even allowed to walk-out or crib or sleep !! what more, i had to 'watch it closely to trace some feminist cues' .. & that was a real pain in d' a$$
wo baat alag hai ki mujhe iss paper ke grades bahut acche mile the :P

otherwise, the worst movie i hv seen -and managed to left it in middle, thankfully- is 'boom'

@ Richa
Thank you! I am also very proud of you having read your latest post a while ago. Once again, wonderful writing.

And Tiranga? Haven't seen it yet. Should I?

@ Supemus
:D
Thank you. I am headed towards your blog as I write.

@ Mayuri
I know exactly what you mean. There is this book called Money by this British dude called Martin Amis, and it is the most horrible book I have ever read. But I had to for one of my classes. Strangely enough, I landed up getting an A in my analysis of it whereas I was sure that my teacher would flush my paper down the toilet.
Boom has got another vote I see. Now I am tempted. :D

RB said...

Haan haan...jao. Dekho. Bas mere peechhe mat aa jaana danda le ke. You'll love it if you enjoy the Raj Kumar style of dialogue delivery. Hayeee....kya kya yaad dila rahe ho mujhe.
God!!

And I'm so glad you liked my post. Thanks. :-)

Jayant said...

Oh, the worst movie...hmm..there are SO many. Yaadein for sure. No doubt about that. Oh no, wait. Ever seen Prem Ag(g)an? You'll feel obligated to add 'Red' to your list of favourite movies after watching that one! :D

That Girl said...

First, love the new template. It's great. And I love the pics you've put up on the sidebar and the names you've given them. Your clicks? Gorgeous.

And coming to the movie part, I don't like watching movies much and I've hardly seen any that I didn't particularly wanna watch (for one reason or the other), so not too many horror stories. Still there have been some - Pyare Mohan for instance. It was forced upon me as in-transit 'entertainment' (that's what they call it) while on vacation and it Sucked with a capital S.
Why are some movies made at all?

Unknown said...

@ Richa
I read another review of Tiranga...on Dirtscapes blog. That was HILARIOUS. So I am getting more and more keen to check out at least ten minutes of it.

@ Jayant
Did see Prem Aggan in bits and pieces. I was living in Chandigarh then and it was a Sunday with nothing to do but laze at home.
But Yaadein? Hmm...it's almost a rule of thumb to not watch Kareena Kapoor.

@ Amiya
Thank you. Yes, my clicks, my names. :)
Pyare Mohan? Stars whom? I am actually on this mission to at least see ten minutes of every movie that has made to this category in this post. I think I Am getting masochistic in my old age.

Jayant said...

@ Woodsmoke's reply to Amiya: LMAO!! :D

Komal said...

hey the new look is so refresing!!

I would vote for "boom"..u have to watch it and am sure u can if u could survive through Red :D

don`t u think this post ended quite abruptly?? may be the movie did that to you :p

RB said...

And heyyy, the request I made on KI's birthday has finally been heard. :D

R said...

You CAN NOT do this to me.

Uhm, okay, so lets have a deal. You listen to heavy metal for a week and I watch this masterpiece.
Whatsay?
:P

Dil maange more!! HORRIBLE!!!
Shahid Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi and Ayesha Takia... one man.. all three women in love with him and and the movie ends with all three of them falling in the ocean and he saves only the one women he loves and lets the others die!!

there are ofcourse many other movies.. but this was just off the top of my head.

kirrinisland looks pretty!!

Butterfly said...

Much better template.:-D
The worst movie which I have ever seen is KANK.

dipthought said...

Well Sayantani, contrary to public perception, I always felt light colored fonts on dark backgrounds are not exactly soothing to the eyes, and off-white on black is no exception. Made it a little tougher to read for shortsighted people like me.

And sadly, I tend to forget the movies I do not like, so cant really figure out "the worst". However, among those I can remember, it was Munnabhai MBBS. I found it so stupid that I walked out midway and did not even try to watch the sequel.

Kavyaa said...

oh the world is indeed turning black!! lol! jokes apart, loved this template, though the earlier one wasn''t bad either...

btw, Red???!! bad luck Woodsmoke..u had to inflict such torcherous moments upon urself!
As for me, one look at the promos of such movies and I know it's not worth sitting thru even if i got paid for it!!!
yeah but sumtimes evn promos can prove fatally deceptive... Kisna for one, had thrillingly promising promos, but 15 long minutes into the movie, and u realize the significance of the axiom, "never judge a book by its cover..and a movie by its promos!!"
hilariously terrible, it was!!

Anonymous said...

@dipthought
Cool! Ur post was pretty profound... and yes Munnabhai isnt good enough.... 'Intelligent' ppl of course dont remember bad films... and munnabhai was 'bad'... so what if it integrated the gutter fighter into the world of medicine...so what if high-brow medical world can change to incorporate the Munnas of this world...so what if depressed patients can be made to look towards the brighter side of life...
Munnabhai had lots of 'fantastical' moments, but I still think that its a modern semi-classic...so what if goons are required to heal our problems...as long as each one helps the other in society, I'm game for the 'goon'...

@ Jayant
Thanks.

@ Komal
Ok, so Boom gets another vote. I will look for it now. Did the post seem it ended abruptly? I actually thought that that worked well enough for a conclusion. But let me take a look again. Thanks.

@ Richa
Yes, finally!

@ Rohit
Err...ok. I got the point.

@ Manasi
That does make Dil Mange More appear to be the best movie of all time. Again, I have yet to see that too.
And thanks for liking KI's new look.

@ Butterfly
KANK gets another vote. Although I personally would not put it in that category.

@ Dipthought
Really?

@ Aritro
Thanks for your comment. It reminds me of one of the many reasons why you are the one person I prefer to watch every movie with...be it the most cerebral or the most ridiculous. You remain, in spite of the profusion of people in my life, my most favorite movie viewing companion.

Unknown said...

@ Kavya
Sorry for missing your comment. I somehow managed to scroll past it. An honest, unintentional mistake. But still, sorry, sorry, sorry.
Thanks for liking the template.
And for the warning about Kisna. I haven't seen it. One of its songs that I saw in the promos, had Sushmita Sen dancing in a blue room with blue lights and blue makeup and bluish dress...that was scary enough to keep me away from the theater.

Anonymous said...

I was just browsing through the internet and came across your blog. I think you've got an attractive template and by what I see from people's comments you have done it yourself. Good Job.
Now to answer your question, there is a list of movies I didn't like, but I can't imagine anyone not liking 'Munnabhai', you have to seriously lack any sense of humour to dislike this movie.

dipthought said...

@ the last post
you surely mean "crude sense of humor", right?

Bollywood i bow to thee ...who else would care to make movies for braindead , mentally challenged , class A retards like us. All along i looked for asinine intervention to change my life, when all i had to do was turn on the TV.

DON said...

Black template is not easy on the eyes..I think any other colour would be better...

Have seen many of them but here are a few-
Yaadein, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Main prem ki diwani hoon, Mumbai se aaya mera dost....I was a big fan of bachhan, i tried to support Abhishek initially but Mumbai se... killed the fan in me...I can't stand both the bachhans now...
I hated Hrithik for putting me through that torture in Yaadein and Main prem ki...horrible and horrendous...Now i kinda started liking him after Dhoom2 [though the film was shitty]..
Nadeem really insisted that I watch Red. He tried to convince me for almost 10 mins on phone. I still said no. It had celina jaitely in it...
I also hated Mela [aamir, his bro faisal and twinkle] I can never forgive Twinkle for her performance...the worst performance by a heroine ever...

DON said...

Hey Sayan, how about a review of The Namesake..whenever you watch it..

Dhoritri said...

Ha ha ha !!! I also watch films just so that I can hear some Hindi...RED did badly at the box office too...What is worse is that some REDs have earned good money in India.Example - Nehle pe Dehle..Aap ki khatir...onek aache erom..

@ Vari
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you more often here. It's always nice to get a new reader. :) Thanks again.

@ Shardul
Now you are being mean. Some Bollywood is really cool.

@ Praveen
Impressive list you came up with, dude. I have yet to see Yaadein and Mela. Will get back to you once I have checked them out.
I promise a review of The Namesake as and when I am able to see it. It's not come to Moscow yet.

@ Dhoritri
Yet to see Aap ki Khatir and Nehle pe Dehla. Which one do you think I should start with? :)

"Some Bollywood" hmm interesting. Define some , 1%????
