300

I saw the movie 300 last night. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel by the same name, the film is a visual delight provided larger than life, computer graphics are your cup of tea. And they better be, because this is it. This is the only selling point of the movie. Maybe by some stretch of generosity, even the music can be called interesting, since unconventional it certainly is. But then, that’s it. Nothing else is memorable neither in terms of performance, story nor characterization.

I am not sure from where to start ripping this movie into shreds. Perhaps from the fact that the director, Zack Snyder has actually said in an interview that historical details were purposefully changed so that they would look “cool“ and work better for movie purposes. Pick up a goddamn fairy tale then! Don’t go around telling history the way you want to.

Or perhaps from the fact that everything looks so fake that even when heads get chopped off, or arms get mutilated, nothing really happens to you inside. Contrast that with a particularly poignant scene in Saving Private Ryan where one of the soldiers searches in the debris for his arm that has been just been blown off by a grenade.

Or perhaps from the fact that the protagonists know only three ways of delivering the already poor beyond belief dialogues so much so that in the entire movie there is not one dialogue that evokes the same emotion as the one in Gladiator when Russell Crowe faces Joaquin Phoenix and says, “My name is Maximus…commander of the armies of the north…loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius, father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.

This is a war/ adventure film, but where is the tension, the gripping excitement, the edge of the seat thrill and fear that even the tamest of the scenes in Lord Of The Rings had? Nowhere, although 300 is one of the big blockbuster movies that Hollywood seems to be proud of this year.

More than anything else it is disgusting how the movie is all about the noble white man’s struggle and victory against the primitive Orient. The essential story of 300 is that Sparta and Greece have been challenged by the Persians. The Spartan king, Leonidas, is white, noble, heroic and someone every woman in the audience will find it very easy to fall in love with. Provided they don’t have backgrounds in history. By contrast, the Persian king, Xerxes is brown, primitive, and the kind of man very few will ever fantasize about. He lives in a harem, wears vulgar jewelry, is surrounded by naked women and other intoxications whereas the Spartan king is a good clean man, with no addictions, only noble heroic charms and of course he is staunchly monogamous. So the Asians have invaded Sparta with a million soldiers against whom only 300 of the Spartan army is available to fight. Now such unequal battles are part of history and have been fought countless times. My own brother who has got a supremely intelligent mind and memory for military history can write several essays to prove this right and so there is nothing shocking or alarming about the movie maker’s claim. But what is repulsive is how he brings his contemporary awareness and prejudices in to this film. His brand of Asians attack with strange monsters, magic and mumbo jumbo, disfigured men, and they demonstrate a passion for the weird, the brutal, and the savage. The Asian army is big, slow and rather incapable of war. The Spartans are methodical, disciplined, and swift. And of course the only person who defects to the Persian side is a grotesque man with severe disfigurements that make it impossible for him to fight from the Spartan side. So the implication is clear…you have to be totally wrong somewhere to take “their” side. Particularly telling is the last scene where the hero, King Leonidas is sprawled dead, his body pierced with arrows. From the way the camera moves over his body it immediately brings to mind images of crucifixion, and we know what parallels are being drawn between this celluloid hero and the other religious one. The suggestion of the battle between “good” versus “evil” and which side is which is too clear in the director’s head, and it is this black and white distinction that I am not comfortable with. There are too many grey cells protesting.

Blockbuster? Really?

i would second you on the history part

but regarding the animation part - they did a good job and you will feel what you want to feel [out of an animation movie] in another 15 years [maybe less]; give some time to the technology to evolve. computer generated figures that probably weren't meant to move you won't possible be able to move you anyways.

Hi, that's a brilliant review to say the least. You don' know me, I've been eavedropping at your blog for a couple of months - have been tempted to leave a comment many times but I'm a bit of an anonymous voyeur (and was afraid of being labelled a freak hehe)Well, have always wanted to say that I like the way you think, and I love the way you write. The Tehelka story made my day :) Good work Sayantani (pardon if that sounds horribly pretentious/condescending/pontifcating - its all pure praise)...and good luck, writing and otherwise!

I'm yet to see this film, but Ive heard that its shoddy with bogus history. This review completely proves this thus.
The east seems to be the abode of Stan while everything correct and 'fair' happens in the west.
The Siege of Thermopylae by this team of 300 Spartans is one of the landmark events in western history. Immense bravery being shown by Leonidas and camp. But for this, there would have been no Greek Tragedy, or Aristotle....
As far as other such victories by unfancied armies go, I would cite the defence of Stalingrad, or Vietnam's defeat of the US. Or even Our own soldiers' feats at Szechen La in the Chinese War.
Significance wise very few events beat greece's triumph in this war in 480 BC, Salamis with Thermopylae being one of its major 'highlights'.
I would like to add that of all the women I've met in my life, I havent seen anyone capture the essence of war as well as My sis.

Two weeks ago I saw the foreign minister of Iran protest about the parallels drawn in the movie on CNN, especially since US-Iran relations are at such a tender junction. He claimed that the movie was trying to brainwash the moviewatchers into taking sides against persians.

I have no idea if that was even 1/8th of the motive behind the movie, but it is interesting that you made similar observations.

Now I am not wasting my precious pocket money on this. I'd like to add the promos suggest clearly what the movie must be like.

Saving Private Ryan is a supercool movie. (Remember I got a mother, you got a mother.. I'm willing to bet that even the Captain has a mother. Well maybe not the Captain, but the rest of us have mothers?)

And yeah.. Namesake!!! I'm WAITING.

I demand my 10 bucks back since they should pay you to watch a movie like that. You should write a letter to the Argonaut regarding the movie. I hope I can get my message clear; it was the worst movie ever.
I noticed of course right away the fact that Spartans were all white and light colored eyed. TO my understanding Greeks are not white. I have confirmed this with several people who have visited. Also, why were the bad guys black? Persians are not black.
The special effects were bad, how come blood would splash and look "real" but you would never see it land anywhere, nobody would get stained by it. 300 is a political movie, just to support the current war! I could not believe it, it's the same plot! that evil congress who doesn't want to send help
I'm so glad you wrote about that movie, right on!. Friday night while in Seattle we had nothing else to do so my brother took us to watch the movie. I could not agree more with you. The movie was the worst I have ever seen.

Hmmm... haven't seen it yet.. but still curious to see what hollywood's take on it is. In case anyone is interested in the actual history of the battle and subsequent ass kicking (much like the one that Alexander's army got by ...who was that again??? oh ya Asians if I recall :) ) that Xerxes I army received from the greeks after the battle of thermopylae check out this website:

Expected, I think. The promos themselves are quite revelatory of how immensely stupid the movie is. Oh, and the mind-numbingly bad acting too. The dialogues sound like they'd fit better in some cheap action flick starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
No wonder you're sounding so frustrated. :D Who wouldn't be, after sitting through such torture.

hehehehe... it's just hollywood being commercial dude!! :-P it's like those masala govinda flicks where nothing makes sense and eventually gives you a headache... (actually its worse - govinda can squeeze out a few laughs if he puts his mind to it... i got a better parallel - it's like a karan johar movie! you expect something worthwhile out of all the glitz and glamour and studsy looking guys but all you get is dollops of cruddy mush and more mush... well at least the songs are nice - 300 doesnt have that either!!!!) it's senseless and irrational and praise god/allah/bhagwan that there wasnt a typical "captain america to the rescue" moment.. they had the movie on cable sometime back and i was bored stiff... i actually fell asleep and after reading the review - i am GLAD i did...
btw - anybody seen mel gibson's apocalypto???
how's that matching up???
i am DYING to see "the pursuit of happyness" - love will smith!!!
as for the Namesake, i loved the book so much that i am dreading the movie - i already have imaginary scenes playing in my head with tabu and irfan... i've seen just one silly movie of kal penn's - so i'm wondering how he's gonna be like... and i so so so hope that the kolkata scenes are not all abt rosogulla and howrah bridge!!
i am a mira nair fan - esp monsoon wedding - which really captured the essense of delhi... so i am waiting with bated breath to see what she did with our city...

also vir - lucky girl yr fiancee!! congrats to u as well :-)

Vir Nakai said...

@Keka well if you saw kal penn in Harrlod and Kumar go to Whitecastle (its brilliant i tell you) and see him in Namesake he is great in both of them i thought...

Mel Gibsons movie was werid, graphic and pretty whacked out but i still thought 300 was kickass...

Amrita would not count it as lucky......more like lots of hard work.. ok back to the magazine before i get fired for expressing my movie views...

Anonymous said...

@Vir - hehehe i HAVE seen harold and kumar go to whitecastle - (there were times once when quality entertainment used to mean endless futzed out hours of star movies) and truth be told, i was fonder of the chinese/ japanese/ korean guy (uhhh... i see now - i am subliminally racist... hmm) :-)
and it was at par with classics such as "bill and ted's excellent adventure" (that had keanu reeves as ted.. i think!!) and even the more recent (and headache inducing) ashton kutcher movie - "dude! where's my car"
i was also reading that kal penn was also there in "superman returns" - what did he play there?! i wonder....

Vir Nakai said...

lol yea all great movies.. i think he is the henchman in superman returns...

Bill and Teds Excellent adventure :)

@ Dan
So disappointed to see that I could not talk you out of the movie. Thanks for the link though. It's really useful.

@ Jayant
So you ended up seeing it too?
I do feel for you, then. The dialogs were the worst things...they nearly killed me.

Unknown said...

@ Keka
You fell asleep while watching 300? Hee hee hee. I liked the analogy with Karan Johar movies. Btw KANK didn't even have good music, except maybe two songs or so.

By this time you may have ended up seeing The Namesake. I am curious to know what you thought of it.
